MONROE HOUSING AUTHORITY ANNOUNCES $6.2 MILLION COMMUNITY REVITALIZATION INVESTMENT AT BURG JONES PLAZA
Renovation Project Will Modernize 147 Units and Improve Quality of Life for Families in Monroe
MONROE, LOUISIANA — The Monroe Housing Authority (MHA) is proud to announce a $6.2 million community revitalization investment into Burg Jones Plaza, the largest public housing community in Monroe, Louisiana. This transformational initiative reflects MHA’s ongoing commitment to providing safe, decent, and quality affordable housing for families throughout the community.
Burg Jones Plaza is a multifamily public housing community consisting of 302 units and serves hundreds of families across Monroe. As one of the agency’s most significant housing communities, the revitalization effort represents a major investment into improving housing conditions, enhancing quality of life, and strengthening the surrounding neighborhood for current and future generations.
Phase I of the revitalization project includes the renovation of 83 units located on the Bonner side of the community in the southwest section of Burg Jones Plaza. This phase represents a $3.2 million investment and is currently being completed by Rock Enterprise Construction, LLC.
Phase II of the project includes the renovation of an additional 64 units on the southeast side of the community and is being completed by Grindstone Construction, LLC. The second phase is a $2.8 million investment continuing MHA’s commitment to providing safe, decent, and quality housing to families residing at Burg Jones Plaza.
The renovation efforts include significant interior and exterior upgrades designed to improve safety, functionality, and long-term sustainability while modernizing living environments for families residing within the community.
“The Monroe Housing Authority remains committed to investing in our families and neighborhoods,” said Shelva L. Thomas, Chief Deputy Director & People Officer for Monroe Housing Authority. “This revitalization project is more than construction, it is an investment
into people, opportunity, dignity, and community development. Families deserve to live in environments that are safe, welcoming, and reflective of the value we place on our residents.”
Public Housing communities such as Burg Jones Plaza provide affordable housing opportunities for low-income families while connecting residents to supportive services, educational opportunities, workforce development initiatives, youth programming, and community resources designed to strengthen self-sufficiency and overall well-being.
The Monroe Housing Authority continues to operate under its mission of “Building Strong Communities, One Home, One Family at a Time,” and this investment represents another significant step forward in fulfilling that commitment to the residents and families of Monroe.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony commemorating the revitalization investment will take place at Burg Jones Plaza on Wednesday at 1:00 p.m., where community leaders, residents, contractors, stakeholders, and partners will gather to celebrate the continued transformation and progress within the community.
