Ouachita Green’s Household Hazardous Waste Event Draws Record Participation

Ouachita Parish, LA — Ouachita Green successfully hosted its Household Hazardous Waste Event on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at the Ike Hamilton Expo Center, with an overwhelming community response and impact.

In just four hours, 964 vehicles came through the event, safely disposing of materials that might otherwise have been improperly discarded. A dedicated team of 147 volunteers representing 27 different groups worked efficiently to unload items and assist residents throughout the day.

The event resulted in the collection of an impressive 100,302 pounds of materials, all of which were responsibly disposed of, recycled, or diverted from illegal dumping. Among the most common items collected were household hazardous materials such as paint, pesticides, and flammable liquids, as well as electronic waste, scrap metal, and tires.

“This event continues to show the incredible commitment our community has to keeping Ouachita Parish clean and safe,” said Sheila Kay Downhour, Executive Director, Ouachita Green.  “Removing over 100,000 pounds of potentially harmful materials from homes and the environment in just a few hours is a powerful accomplishment.”

Ouachita Green extends sincere appreciation to its major sponsors: Living Well Foundation, Humana Healthy Horizons of Louisiana, Ouachita Parish Police Jury, City of Monroe, City of West Monroe, and Advancion. Their support, along with numerous in-kind donations, volunteer hours, and community contributions, made the event possible.

Events like this play a critical role in preventing pollution, protecting public health, and reducing illegal dumping across the region.
