It’s another beautiful day in Monroe, Louisiana Sept 19, 2022

What's up this weekend?

Check out what’s happening in MWM this weekend!

It is another beautiful day in MONRE, LOUISIANA!
This is a great time of the year. You can feel fall in the mornings and then by noon we are reminded we are in Louisiana. Last Week was amazingly great and we are just getting started.
Our Young Professionals met at Flying Tiger on Tuesday for lunch. Dr. John Sutherlin, ULM professor, gave a wonderful presentation on the history and state of marijuana. Dr. Sutherlin, ties in humor and had the YP laughing a lot. Please come to a YP meeting or urge your employees too. A great group that celebrates our city and a great group that loves our city. YP is also a great retention program.
Also on Tuesday, the Chamber attended the “Blessing of the Bridge” at Hwy 165 and Renwick. The Bridge looks great, and it celebrates Carroll High School. Thanks to Mayor Ellis and Councilwoman Juanita Woods for making this project a reality. The event was made extra special when every senior at Carroll High School walked over from the school to join us.
On Wednesday we joined the Children’s Museum and Johnny’s Pizza to launch the Johnny’s Round Up campaign that supports their move to Forsythe Park. The Children’s Museum move is part of a much larger economic development effort our city is undertaking. Their move will free up some great real estate next to the Ouachita Candy Company properties. A perfect spot to compliment that development and the river front development. They need more space – they serve over 50,000 visitors a year. The move to Forsythe will double their size and double their attendance. The move also compliments the city’s efforts at Forsythe Park. The City of Monroe and our City Council, under Chairperson Kema Dawson, has ok’d a much-needed master plan for 3 of our largest parks and our rec centers.
On Thursday and Friday, The Chamber along with our sponsor Bill Willson and Century Next Bank hosted Roy Moye III and his STEMusic show. Bill, working with Monroe City Schools, arranged for each 3rd and 4th grader at MCS to see the concert at their future respective high schools. Roy Moye’s mission is to excite children about STEM learning. If you ask any 3rd or 4th grader that attended they will tell you how much fun and educational it was. A great two days.
Friday was the Chamber’s Annual Golf Tournament. A perfect weather day out at Frenchman’s Bend. It was a blast – Thank you to all who participated and thank you Daphne for coordinating. Thanks to our staff and volunteers for helping.

Mayor Ellis also discussed the $1,800,000.00 grant from the Monroe-West Monroe Convention and Visitors Bureau and how it will be used in the expansion of the Forsythe Tennis Courts.
Saturday our Warhawks fought valiantly against Alabama but lost. Lafayette comes to town this Saturday. Please make plans to attend. A huge game for us.
Also, on Saturday the city hosted “Rolling on the Riverfront” – a great time with the new logo for downtown was revealed.
If you get a chance, please go see “Annie Get Your Gun” at the Strauss Theatre. What a great show – we have some amazing talent in our town. In two weeks, the Strauss Youth Theatre will perform numerous performances of “The Sound of Music”.
Last week as well, we had our Finance committee meet. This week on Tuesday our executive committee meets followed by our board meeting on Thursday. I am on the road locally making TR calls. Our sponsors make it happen for us.
Wednesday we are a co-host of the Career Expo – over 80 vendors will be on site ready to hire at the Monroe Civic Center.
We are working to secure dates for The Governors Lunch and a Congresswoman Letlow lunch. Our Government Advocacy Group meets Wednesday with Dr. Don Coker / Ouachita Parish School Board.
Thursday the Chamber along with the Monroe City will host all of our commercial realtors as part of an ongoing effort to unify our work and help promote groups and areas of town.
Please check out our website – we keep updating and adding things.
Special Shout out and Thanks to Vantage Health for sponsoring the Medical Moments segment of this newsletter. What a great organization that calls Monroe home. If you have any health-related news or events please submit it to us. We happily run them at no charge.
Be looking each Wednesday for a new edition of “Ouachita One Table”
Be watching on Thursday’s as we will send out Discover Monroe- West Monroe’s calendar for the weekend. Great things happening all over the region –
Thanks for being part of the chamber and for all you do.
